When he ascended the throne, his name was Amenhotep IV, but in the sixth year of his reign he changed it to “Akhenaten”, a name roughly translated by the late Egyptologist Dominic Montserrat as “Benevolent of (or for) Athens”. Akhenaten married Nefertiti before or shortly after becoming a pharaoh, who is portrayed in some works of art as equal to her husband.
