Antique French Devotional altar in bronze with green velvet and silk. A travel altar and souvenir of Orphelins Apprentis D’Auteuil signed Boris. Lovely detail and in good condition. Showing signs of wear commensurate with age. All original.

Concerned about the fate of orphans in Paris, Abbé Roussel founded L’Œuvre de la Première Communion on March 19, 1866 with his first 6 street children. He rented an abandoned house at 40 rue Jean de la Fontaine, in the Auteuil district of Paris. Each child welcomed was cared for, taught to read and write, and prepared for their first communion. They then had to be taught a trade and found an apprenticeship master.
In 1871, after the war and the Commune, the economic situation worsened. In Paris, it became difficult to place young people from Auteuil in apprenticeships outside. In July, Louis Roussel opened his own workshops and Les Orphelins Apprentis d’Auteuil joined L’Œuvre de la Première Communion. They distinguished themselves in particular in the printing trade with a weekly newspaper, La France illustrée. To find the resources necessary for the functioning of the institution, Abbé Roussel deployed unfailing energy. Fortunately, he could count on the benefactors, mobilized from the first day, who did not fail him in difficult times.
When Abbé Roussel retired in 1895, 15,000 children had already passed through L’Œuvre d’Auteuil.
In 2025, they are still continuing his mission to the struggling youth.
