The black T-shaped Hooded Robe, is a rather standard magical implement throughout Western occultism. The same garment is used by different magical systems and initiation groups throughout the world for centuries now.
References to the use of a ritual black Robe with a hood are found in north European witchcraft (Reginald Scots’s “Discoverie of Witchcraft”, 1665), in the initiatory instructions of the Argentium Astrum (A∴A∴) founded by Aleister Crowley (and more specifically concerning the Neophyte grade), in the rituals of modern witches (see the black hooded Robe of the Crone in Janet and Stewart Farrar’s “A Witche’s Bible”), but also more broadly in rituals of initiation, rites of invocation and other practices of the Left Hand Path.
In any case, the hood enhances the meditative introversion of the sorcerer / witch, as well as increases his / her anonymity in order to face the Great Work not on the basis of our sensual ornaments and social identity but according to the degree of spiritual devotion to our true Will.
