In Sanskrit, Linga means a “sign, symbol or ‘mark’ . Derived from this, Shiva linga is a representation of Lord Shiva and is used to worship in temples, homes or shrines. The lingam is often represented as resting on disc shaped platform called a yoni or pitha.
The lingam is a column-like or oval (egg-shaped) symbol of Shiva, the Formless. It often rests in the middle of a rimmed, disc-shaped structure, a representation of Shakti (Power). In traditional Indian society, the lingam is seen as a symbol of the energy and potential of Shiva himself.

This shivling has 4 Shiva’s heads around the middle part.
