About voodoo flags
In Haitian Creole ‘drapo‘ means banner or flag. Sacred banners are one of the most distinctive types of art associated with Haitian voodoo. They are made of various fabrics to which beads or sequins are sewn. Their production requires extraordinary patience and skill. Each individual bead or sequin is sewn to the drapo by hand. Drapos are one of the best examples of Haitian syncretism: They feature the original African symbols alongside Catholic insignia and saints, along with elements of folk magic and elements taken from French military flags and Masonic aprons. Drapa is one of the most prized items in voodoo today. It is no exception that a hand-made drapo is the most valuable item in the equipment of the whole shrine.
