We’ve handpicked these authentic textiles, which are handmade by native Shipibo-Konibo women of the Ucayali region of Eastern Peru. This circular piece is made from beautiful terracotta coloured tocuyo fabric. Tocuyo is the traditional, natural cotton from the region. It is dyed from its paler ecru colour to darker reddy-browns using roots and other plant-based dyes, then left to dry out in the hot sun. Is has then been carefully embroidered with bold black and white Kené lines with a thick teal border.
Embroidered entirely by hand, their designs are influenced by the sacred Ayahuasca plant (The Mother Plant), with complex geometric patterns which are a visual representation of their spirit world. The textiles carry a healing or blessing and are sung like a musical score, which is called an Icaro. The patterns represent the vibrational frequency of the Icaros, as it appears in the visual world of Ayahuasca.
These are original textile pieces coming from the Amazon region, created by working Shipibo mothers and grandmothers. We source them directly from the artesanas themselves and have become friends with many of them over the years. This piece came from the town of Yarinacocha in Pucallpa.
This circular textile is beautifully intricate, vibrantly colourful, one-of-a-kind and has taken hours of needlework to embroider. You will be the holder of a true piece of Shipibo culture and wisdom, the holder of a physical piece of art that represents their unique bond with nature. 🌿
